Bill and Patty Gloeckler have been friends for a long time with and association from church, school and neighborhood. As the kids are grown, they wanted to create a little backyard haven that they could relax and enjoy. They had a pretty good idea of what they wanted and had already contracted the concrete for the patio work and pergola. They did have some specific requests for the gardens and a number of questions.
Do we keep or remove the magnolia? What to do with the massive rhodies? Can we have edibles and enough light for vegetables. We’d like a water garden. Summer color. I think we did pretty good with the list. We took an underutilized corner and fenced it for the veggie garden, prepping it with compost. We took another corner and added raspberry and blueberry plants (they had a few) which have thrived.
The magnolia and rhodies remained with some pruning to help strenghten them. They add great spring color and good screening to the neighbors. We added plants beyond spring with roses and hydrangea and a mosaic of perennials that provides color throughout the Erie outdoor season. We are tickled with the results of this backyard makeover and are glad to provide our friends with enjoyment in their outdoor environment.
